INTRO

I would like to say a few words about myself and how we have come to this point. April Sky is situated in Lempäälä, Finland, in the middle of the peaceful countryside.  We are surrounded by fields, forest and Lake Pyhäjärvi.  We get to enjoy the beauty of nature every day.

In 1984, when I was 4-years-old, two lovely Bernese Mountain Dog puppies, Ani and Assi, came to live with us. I got to spend my whole childhood all the way to my teenage years together with these wonderful dogs.  Ani, who was such a gentle and wise dog, was my dog.  

In 2005, after studies and getting our own home, me and Mikko got our first own Bernese Mountain Dog Luka, Plaudite Great Vagabond.  Along with Luka we got to know the world of dog shows and met many new people.  We arranged a glorious 1-year birthday party for Luka and by chance Zoltan Baffia from Hungary also attended this party. Zoltan has become a dear friend of mine and, as a result of this friendship, wonderful dogs Nadja and Melli, Szarazpataki Gesztenye and Szarazpataki Igeret, now live with us. Over the years, I have cooperated with Tuomo Tulokas from kennel Bernario – thank you Tuomo! As a result of this cooperation, my life is now enriched by Hertha and Liana, Fanny van’t Rijkenspark and Krush on You from Orsina’s Land, whom I own together with Tuomo.  This cooperation also resulted in Myrsky, Bernario Esperanza, who stayed with us from Nadja’s first litter, since we just couldn’t give such a cute and beautiful puppy away.

I have not become a breeder on a whim.  I completed the basic course for a breeder in 2006, the advanced course in 2008, and in 2012 I applied for my own kennel name April Sky.  I have constantly strived to increase my knowledge by listening to those who are more experienced than me, by reading, and by participating in different kinds of courses and trainings.  I have been also in the board of the Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dog Club of Finland, which has widened my view of Bernese Mountain Dogs as well as issues revolving around the breed.

During the years our living room has been the home of four litters. Growing these litters has been a very educating experience. Although I am only at the beginning of this all, I am very much aware of what I've gotten myself into.  I already know that I have not chosen an easy road. Luckily, I have not had to do this alone; it is wonderful to notice that you have friends around you whom you can trust and who help when you need it.

I am happy for everything that Bernese Mountain Dogs have brought to my life. My life is filled with happiness, joy, laughter, wagging tails, Bernese smiles, hair, mud, and loyal looks.  At times, sorrow and misfortune are a part of life as well.  It is probably all this combined that makes this lifestyle worth it all, worth living.

Haluan kertoa hieman itsestäni ja siitä, miten tähän on tultu. April Sky sijaitsee Lempäälässä, Suomessa, maaseudun rauhassa. Ympärillämme on peltoja, metsää ja Pyhäjärvi, luonnon kauneudesta saamme nauttia joka päivä. 

Vuonna 1984, ollessani 4-vuotias, meille muutti kaksi ihanaa berninpaimenkoiran pentua Ani ja Assi. Sain viettää koko lapsuuteni nuoruuteen asti näiden ihanien koirien kanssa. Ani oli minun koirani, ja hän oli hyvin lempeä ja viisas.

Vuonna 2005 opiskeluiden jälkeen ja oman kodin hankkimisen myötä hankimme yhdessä Mikon kanssa ensimmäisen yhteisen berninpaimenkoiramme Lukan, Plaudite Great Vagabond. Lukan myötä tutustuimme koiranäyttelyihin ja moniin uusiin ihmisiin. Pidimme Lukalle upeat 1-vuotissyntymäpäiväjuhlat, ja sattumien kautta juhliin osallistui myös Zoltan Baffia Unkarista. Hänestä on tullut hyvä ystäväni, minkä seurauksena meillä asuu nyt ihanat Szarazpataki Gesztenye ja Szarazpataki Igeret, Nadja ja Melli. Vuosien aikana olen tehnyt yhteistyötä Tuomo Tulokkaan kanssa kennel Bernariosta – kiitos Tuomo! Tämän yhteistyön tuloksena olen saanut elämääni rikastuttamaan Herthan ja Lianan, Fanny van’t Rijkenspark ja Krush on You from Orsina’s Land, jotka omistan Tuomon kanssa yhdessä. Yhteistyön tulosta on myös Bernario Esperanza, Myrsky, joka jäi meille Nadjan ensimmäisestä pentueesta, sillä eihän niin söpöä ja kaunista pentua voinut pois antaa.

En ole ryhtynyt kasvattajaksi hetken mielijohteesta. Suoritin kasvattajan peruskurssin vuonna 2006, jatkokurssin 2008 ja vuonna 2012 hain omaa kennelnimeä April Sky. Olen koko ajan pyrkinyt lisäämään tietämystäni kuuntelemalla kokeneempia, lukemalla, osallistumalla erilaisille kursseille ja koulutuksiin. Olen myös ollut Suomen Sveitsinpaimenkoirien johtokunnassa, mikä on laajentanut käsitystäni berninpaimenkoirista ja rodun ympärillä pyörivistä asioista.

Vuosien aikana olohuoneessamme on kasvanut neljä pentuetta, ja nämä ovat olleet minulle opettavaisia kokemuksia. Vaikka kaikki on minulla vasta alussa, olen tietoinen siitä, mihin olen ryhtynyt. Sen tiedän jo nyt, että helppoa tietä en ole valinnut. Onneksi yksin ei ole tarvinnut olla; on ihanaa huomata, että ympärillä on ystäviä, joihin voi luottaa ja joilta saa tarvittaessa apua.

Olen onnellinen siitä kaikesta, mitä berninpaimenkoirat ovat elämääni tuoneet. Elämästäni ei puutu onnea, iloa, naurua, heiluvia häntiä, bernimäistä hymyä, karvaa, kuraa ja uskollisia katseita. Välillä elämään kuuluu myös hieman surua ja epäonnea. Kaikki tämä varmaan tekeekin tästä elämäntyylistä kaiken sen arvoista, elämän makuista.
